In just a matter of few years, Djibouti has emerged as a vibrant and growing economic entity. As the country prepares to embark on a major economic expansion programme, the United Arab Emirates has become one of the leading suppliers of goods and services to the country.
From automobiles, spare parts, heavy machinery and all kinds of finished goods as well as technical knowhow and expertise – the UAE has been at the forefront of supplying Djibouti with the tools it needs to expand its growing economy.
In an effort to boost bi-lateral trade between Djibouti and Dubai, Emirates SkyCargo launched weekly services to Djibouti with the Airbus A310-300F freighter. Djibouti, Emirates’ 15th African destination, is now served by the Airbus A310-300F freighter once a week. Operating every Sunday, Emirates freighter EK 4805 departs Dubai at 0700 hours, arriving in Djibouti at 0900 hours on the same day.
The new service has already gained immense popularity and is being utilised to transport a wide range of goods between Djibouti and Dubai. The freighter, Airbus 310-300F offers a gross payload of 39 tonnes and state-of-the-art technology and offers excellent performance capabilities.
To Djibouti, Emirates SkyCargo is expecting to carry manufactured and consumer goods, machinery and IT equipment from around its network, particularly from the Indian Subcontinent and the Far East.
Djibouti exports will include personal effects. The route may expand to include Dar-es-Salaam in the future as demand is evaluated.
“This new route represents Dubai’s ongoing investment in East-African and a natural extension to support Djibouti’s logistics requirements,” said Hiran Perera, Emirates’ Vice President Cargo (Freighters). “Djibouti is a medium-haul destination for our A310F freighter route and will compliment our services in the area very well offering sufficient size and optimum speed,” he said.
In Africa, Emirates SkyCargo serves 15 destinations including, Alexandria, Cairo, Casablanca, Dar-es-Salaam, Djibouti, Entebbe, Johannesburg, Khartoum, Malawi, Nairobi, Tripoli, Tunis, Lagos, Lilongwe and Accra offering belly-hold and freighter services.
The new service to Djibouti is expected to further improve trade ties between Dubai and Djibuoti in the coming years.
